The Driving Instructor industry is one of the few which at the moment has no compulsory ongoing training and development in place. This is in the process of changing. The IT, Banking and insurance sectors are constantly changing and therefore make it compulsory for their representatives to take further training and learn about new products. Unfortunately it is up to the individual instructor to take it upon themselves to take further training. The majority choose not to, with the attitude of they know it all, or simply think too much on the money aspect of the business, thinking they would lose out on a few hours wages. This is a totally false economy way of thinking. It may be beneficial short term, but if they do not brush up on their skills and keep up to date with the changes within the industry, they will then soon be left behind, with their teaching methods being out of date, and pupils perhaps leaving them not satisfied that they are getting value for money. A knock on effect could be creating a long term problem on our roads, with drivers ill prepared for the ever changing road traffic conditions and being able to deal with modern technology in today’s vehicles.
